But what exactly is self-esteem? Self-esteem, in its truest essence is how you acknowledge your strengths, capabilities and weaknesses. It is about being confident as well as comfortable with yourself inconsiderate of how you look or how much you earn.
If you are among those who think they are not good enough in life, to compete with others, read on the following 5 tips that will help you improve your self-esteem and get to appreciate and love yourself more.
Boost your self-confidence
Having self-confidence matters in almost every aspect of our lives. People who lack self-confidence often meet dissapointments and failures in almost everything they do in life. Some people are born with a lot of confidence and they find themselves living a comparatively easier life than those without.
If you are not among those with naturally high confidence levels then look for ways to boost your self-confidence and build your self-esteem in the process. Ensure that you groom yourself well, be in the right company of people, stop procrastinating, have time with yourself and take pride in yourself.
Identify negative thoughts and beliefs
Self-esteem comes from self-image, which has a lot to do with how you think about yourself and what you believe. It is important that you know what your beliefs are and where they come from when you are working on improving your self-esteem. Consider getting the help of a close friend or relative to get through this or you can indulge in self-talk instead.
Think of those troubling situations you might have come across and how your interpretation and reaction to it was. You might have had a positive or negative reaction or could have been a rational or irrational reaction driven by fear. Once you know your beliefs, and find out that they are negative, change them. Look for alternative ways of handling things; be more positive and analytical.
Accept who you truly are
Once you know yourself, acceptance is the key to building self-esteem and gaining happiness in life. In this, there are two main types of problems; those you can change and find a solution for and start working on, and those that you have no control over, and when you think of them, you do no good to yourself. This principle applies to you too.
Those things you are unhappy about, work towards them, but there those few that you cannot change, leave them to take up the course of life. Accept yourself for who you truly are and love and appreciate what makes you; your skin color, height or even choices of the past. This way, you will find yourself confident and pepped-up about yourself.
Avoid comparing yourself to others
Nobody likes being compared to another person, yet often times we do it as part of human nature. When you compare yourself with another person’s life and find that they are excelling more in a certain field than you, then that can really hurt your self-esteem. Your neighbor has a bigger car or your friend has got a better job than you? Forget such comparisons because you don’t know what their lives are all about.
The only person you should be aiming to be is a better person than you were yesterday, and you will find yourself getting your confidence back and improving your self-esteem.
Aim at changing your self-image
Time to time, people keep on changing and evolving. You are not the same person you were a year ago. You probably were good at something and now you are not anymore. As you change, your self-image changes too. Rather than evaluating yourself on what you used to be good at in the past, try focusing on things you are excelling on at the moment in your life.
Adjust your self-image to reflect your current personality, your skills and ability rather than those of the older version you. This way, you will love what you are achieving and get to appreciate yourself more and more every day, and improve your self-esteem.
If you want to build good self-esteem you have to look at different area’s that are might holding you back to feel truly comfortable and happy with yourself.
It has everything to do with accepting who you are and identifying negative thoughts and believes about yourself that you should change.
